Handling & Care

For untreated, plastic-free genuine leather.

Cleaning

Our products are crafted from plastic-free full-grain leather. As such, they age naturally, develop a patina, and require care in the manner that was customary a century ago.

Tools

It is best to use a damp sponge cloth and water for cleaning. Do not use cleaning agents, as these may damage the surface of the leather.

Cleaning

Wipe over the surface. Do not use abrasive or scratchy sponges, as these may cause damage. Grease stains will fade over time and can therefore be disregarded.

Drying

Allow the leather to dry at room temperature. Wet full-grain leather is delicate and may shrink if exposed to excessive heat – therefore, never dry your product in the oven or on a radiator.

Care

Plastic-free leather is prone to scratches. This is normal and not detrimental, although it may sometimes be considered undesirable in appearance. Leather care products will remove these scratches, nourish the material, and restore its original appearance.

Which leather care?

There is an abundance of leather care products available. However, when making a purchase, ensure that you do not choose petroleum-based products, as these often contain solvents that may damage the leather over time. Only natural, plant-based waxes and oils will preserve the beauty of your product for years to come.

Usage

The leather care product should be applied using a soft sponge or cloth. Leather care products are generally very economical; however, as is often the case, more is more. There is no fixed interval for application, though it is generally recommended to treat the leather once a month or after cleaning.

Application

For light, superficial scratches, a single application is usually sufficient to remove them. In the case of completely worn areas, a second application may be necessary. Massaging the product in by hand can enhance the effect when concealing scratches.

Smoothing

Leather table mats may develop creases or fail to lie completely flat if stored improperly or subjected to frequent movement. However, this can easily be remedied using common household methods.

Tools

You will need an iron, a cloth napkin, tea towel, or Teflon sheet (reusable baking sheet or similar), and a flat, preferably soft surface such as an ironing board. If you do not have an ironing board, an old T-shirt placed on a table will also serve as a suitable base.

Preparation

Place the table mat with the surface facing downwards on your base (the rough side should be facing you). Then place the cloth or Teflon sheet over the table mat. Heat the iron to a medium-high temperature.

Ironing

Move the iron over the cloth or Teflon sheet using smooth, even strokes. The objective is to apply gentle pressure; the table mat should not warp or shift during the process. This should be done as briefly as possible – check regularly to see if the desired smoothness has been achieved.
