Just like our aprons, gloves, and leather pot holders, these knife rolls are crafted from only the finest materials to ensure exceptional durability, aesthetic appeal, and functionality. But what inspired this development? And what sets our knife roll apart? In this article, we answer these questions and more about our newest innovation.

The Inspiration Behind the ROHLEDER Knife Roll

Over the years, we've had the opportunity to work with a variety of conventional knife rolls—and we noticed some recurring issues. Most notably, the fixed sheath sizes often restricted which knives could be stored. Favourite tools were frequently excluded because the designated slots were either missing or just a few millimetres too narrow. We also saw that some rolls became unusable after a short time, with the fabric or leather getting damaged by the very knives they were meant to protect.

In the beginning, knives might fit tightly—sometimes requiring considerable force to remove—but within weeks, they’d sit too loosely, compromising safety. Both scenarios can lead to dangerous cuts or injuries.

These insights led us to rethink the concept from the ground up. The result: a completely new product that eliminates these issues and significantly improves comfort and usability.

The Magnetic System – The Heart of the Pocketless ROHLEDER Knife Roll

During development, we first asked: What size should the knife slots ideally be? And our answer was: Size shouldn’t matter. We wanted users to access their knife handles directly, without needing to push them into fitted sheaths. That’s when the idea of using magnets came into play.

We conducted extensive testing with different magnet strengths and layouts. Our goals were clear: knives shouldn’t slip, and users should have full flexibility in arranging their tools. We succeeded on both fronts. In the ROHLEDER knife roll, knife width is no longer an issue—blades up to 42 cm in length fit easily.

The magnets are perfectly safe for mobile phones and won’t cause any damage. Wallets and credit cards are also safe, though we do recommend not placing cards with sensitive data directly on the magnets. For added safety and precision, we’ve sewn the magnets securely into the roll. This process is labour-intensive—but precision and attention to detail are hallmarks of everything we do.

ROHLEDER Knife Rolls – Thought Through to the Last Detail

Transport safety was another priority. Our rigorous shock and drop tests—which might have looked like interpretive dance from an outsider’s perspective—ensured our product met uncompromising standards. In the final design, knives stay securely in place regardless of transport conditions.

As always, we use specially tanned, untreated cowhide. The outer leather features natural markings and develops a unique patina over time—a true used look that reflects the product’s life. Inside, premium suede offers a soft, protective bedding for your tools.

To enhance usability, we’ve added three compartments for non-magnetic items like tweezers or small tools, and a versatile zip pocket that’s accessible from both the inside and outside—even when the roll is closed. Two zips leading to the same compartment provide this flexibility. It’s perfect for items like keys or valuables.

Comfort is key in every aspect of the ROHLEDER knife roll—even when carrying it. The handle features a sturdy leather core wrapped in a soft, supple layer that feels great in the hand without digging in. The padded shoulder strap ensures even heavy loads can be carried with ease.

This is a truly European product, based on an Austrian design, made with premium Italian leather, and handcrafted in Portugal with meticulous attention to detail. Heavily stressed seams are double-reinforced, and magnets are precisely sewn into place.
